Chemical Peels Q & A

Smart SKIN Rx

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel involves applying a chemical solution to your skin that results in exfoliation. Over the course of several weeks, old, dead skin cells peel off to reveal regenerated, fresh skin that’s smoother and more evenly textured.

What skin concerns can a chemical peel treat?

Chemical peels are effective in treating a number of troublesome concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damaged skin

Chemical peels can also greatly improve the appearance of aging skin by reducing the prominence of wrinkles and lines.

What types of chemical peels are available?

Smart SKIN Rx offers chemical peels in varying intensities. Crystal can recommend the one that’s best for your skin type and aesthetic goals, depending on whether you want a quick refresher or a thorough exfoliation for blemishes.

Superficial Peels

Superficial peels, or lunchtime peels, offer a mild acid to penetrate the outermost layer of your skin. This results in mild exfoliation that can improve the appearance of mild discoloration and skin roughness. They’re called lunchtime peels because the process is relatively quick and has minimal side effects, and you can schedule your peel during your lunch break!

Medium Peels

Medium peels involve a moderately strong acid to affect both the outer and middle layers of your skin. This peel is great for addressing age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and moderate skin discoloration.

Deep Peels

Deep peels are more intense treatments that target the deepest layers of your skin. Use this option to treat moderate lines, age spots, shallow scars, and freckles.

What precautions should be taken after a chemical peel?

While a chemical peel can offer dramatic skin changes, the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery. After any chemical peel, your skin is more sensitive to the sun, so the application of sunscreen and avoidance of direct sunlight is imperative.

Superficial peels need just 1-7 days of healing, but deep peels may require up to 21 days. While you may experience just a little redness after a superficial peel or swelling and crusting after a medium peel, your skin is bandaged following a deep peel, and you’re directed to soak your skin 4-6 times daily. Crystal often provides creams and serums to apply after a peel and may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your skin’s progress.
